Today 6 December, Jessore Independence Day. Jessore was freed from Pak invaders on this day of liberation war. In the afternoon of this day, the Pak invaders fled from the Jessore cantonment. Jessore district was the first in the country to be freed from the enemy.
On November 20, 1971, Mukti Bahini and Mitra Bahini launched an operation to occupy Jessore Cantonment. At that time, the combined forces surrounded Chougacha, the western base of Pak forces. Then on the night of November 22, Pak forces fell at Chougacha. And on December 6, Jessore was the first to raise the victorious Bangladesh's blood-stained dark green flag.
On the other hand, the joy of liberation. They welcomed that moment of rebirth with all the offerings of the heart. And this victory was the result of the national liberation movement.
After risking their lives, the brave soldiers remembered the victory and joy of that day when their district was freed from the enemy.
The advance base was established by the invading forces at Salua Bazar in Chowagacha Upazila Jessore. At this time, the allied forces and Mukti Bahini built strong bases on three sides of Jessore cantonment. The last operations of the of resistance took place on 3, 4 and 5 December During these three days, the freedom fighters fought with the Pak invading forces in different places of Jessore region. At this time, the allied forces also launched airstrikes and shelling
at various installations of the Pak Army, including the Jessore cantonment, from the border area. At one point, the beleaguered Pak Army started to flee from December 5. In the morning and afternoon of this day, Indian 9th Infantry and 4th Mountain Division fought fiercely with Pakistan's 9th Division. In the afternoon, the Pak army officers realized that the Jessore fort could not be defended in any way.
Lt. in charge of Benapole region. Brigadier Hayat ordered Colonel Shams to move quickly towards Nawapara. And he fled from Jessore Cantonment towards Khulna in the dark of night with his brigade. On December 5 and 6, during their escape, they fought with the Liberation Army at various places including suburban Rajarhat. On the afternoon of December 6, the Allied and Mukti Bahini forces captured the cantonment under the leadership of General Barat, the commander of the Allied forces.
According to the 'Jesore Gazetteer' published by the Ministry of Preparation for Burial of the Martyrs killed by the attackers in the Jessore Cantonment Area, all the Pak Army left the Jessore Cantonment and fled before the evening of the 6th. At around 11:30 am on December 7. Major Manzoor, the commander of Sector 8, and Major General Dalbir Singh, the commander of the Allied 9th Division, entered Jessore. At that time they also did not know that the Jessore cantonment was empty.
They were surprised to see no resistance.
Since independence, December 7 was celebrated as Jessore's Independence Day. But according to information provided by freedom fighters and historians, since 2010 December 6 is being celebrated as Jessore Freedom Day. Mukti Bahini took over the security of Jessore city on December 8. On December 10, Waliul Islam took charge as the Deputy Commissioner of Jessore. On December 11, a public meeting was held at the Town Hall grounds. Mujibnagar Government Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmed and Interim President Syed Nazrul Islam were present there. Office-court proceedings began on December 12.
